Gallery Spain

My Spanish paintings came from a family visit to the small village of Los Alcazares. We stayed in the old part by the beach. Surrounded now by developer’s apartments in their thousands Los Alcazares put me off at first. On looking through my records several years later however it was precisely this encroachment of modernity that drew my attention. I responded not just with a few beach scenes but with images of the surrounding highways and even the planes taxiing at Murcia airport at the edge of the sea.

From the beach

2000. Oil on canvas. 48 x 36 in (120 x 90 cm).
The hotel terrace at Los Alcazares gives right on the beach.

Beach, Los Alcazares

1999. Oil on canvas. 36 x 30 in (90 x 75 cm).
Seen early in the year the holiday beaches at Los Alcazares were nearly deserted.

Kiosk

1999. Oil on canvas. 36 x 30 in (90 x 75 cm).
An ice-cream kiosk on the board-walk at Los Alcazares. The nondescript villas adjacent have their own quiet charm.

Landscape with windmills

1999. Oil on canvas. 36 x 30 in (90 x 75 cm).
A distant wind-farm on the mountains behind Murcia seen from the car.

Plane, Murcia

1999. Oil on canvas. 36 x 30 in (90 x 75 cm).
The airport at Murcia runs parallel to the beach a few hundred metres from the sea. The huge size of modern planes gives a surreal aspect to the scene.

Departure, Murcia

1999. Oil on canvas. 34 x 30 in (85 x 75 cm).
A plane taxis among the palms ready for take-off.
